every year in NYC there is a new food trend .. pizza and pork definitely come to mind.
a new food item popping up is meatballs.
new to the lower east side is the meatball shop .. a tiny restaurant that serves up some delicious balls!
last weekend my wonderful friends heather & mike found themselves to be temporary NYC residents as they were house & animal sitting for some friends of ours. we planned the whole weekend out with fun activities such as seeing the band ween play at central park's summer stage but we also planned some exciting culinary outings ....
the meatball shop was first on the list.
we arrived late on a friday evening (they are open to 2am on most nights, 4am on the weekend) and were greeted by a 45 minute wait, not too bad considering the storied 2hr wait we had heard of. the hostess was very friendly and offered to take my cell phone number in case we wanted to venture out for a cocktail while we waited so we did just that. we went next door to epsteins's bar and after a drink we decided to go back and just order take out. i arrived to find a table opening up and asked the waitress if we could take it .. that was easy!!
the interior is tiny but cozy and service was fast .. as in 10 minutes later we had our food. the meatballs were better than i expected. i'm not a huge meatball fan (i like them but it's not an OMG sort of thing) but these meatballs definitely merited an "OMG"!!
here is what we ordered:
brooke - spicy pork meatballs with spicy meat sauce over mashed potatoes
heather - chicken meatballs with parmesan cream sauce over polenta
mike - spicy pork meatballs with spicy meats sauce and provolone on a baguette
the serving sizes were tame which was perfect for such a decadent meal.
we left happy and full .. but not too full.
